Eco Friendly Sex Toys – 5 Tips On How to Have Greener Sex

by Robyn

When most people think about going green, they don’t think about the little secret (or not-so-secret) friends hiding in their closets or drawers.

Let’s look at the reasons why buying eco-toys is a good idea, things you need to be careful of, and companies that sell them.

There are obvious environmental impacts, but not everyone is green-minded or green-caring.

If that’s the case, you should at least care of your own body.

Far too many sex toys are filled with toxic, harmful chemicals (especially the cheaper ones marked “novelty”). And it’s not just oil-derived Phthalates, which is the current buzzword everyone loves to use. There have been cases of lead and even cadmium, just to name a few.

Eco-toys won’t have any of these dangerous additives, so you can keep your nether-regions safe.

Many companies that go this green route also make a point of avoiding places that don’t respect human or worker’s rights in the manufacturing process.

Yes, you still have to exercise caution with eco-toys!

And it’s the same caution you take with any sex toy – POROSITY.

For example, toys that are made of stone, ceramic, or wood are porous if they are not treated/coated properly.

This means that things can get stuck or start to grow in the micro-crevices and are impossible to 100% sterilized. Things like mold, mildew, fungus, and not to mention bodily fluids, feces, or STIs.

You also have to find out what the coating is made from and how long it will last etc.

Then there’s glass.

Make sure it’s crafted from proper materials (not cheapie glass) and it’s made correctly to avoid excess/major stress points.

NOTE: Don’t only think about the outside of the toy, if it’s not a solid material, see what the components inside are made from. There’s probably plastic in there. If it’s a vibrator, it’s 100% certain there will be plastic.

The best options are things that bio-degrade, but some people just don’t feel comfortable using glass or wood. They trust body-safe silicone.

Here’s the rub though, it’s not biodegradable. But…

  • It lasts a lot longer than plastic
  • It doesn’t poison ocean life
  • It’s non-toxic to soil
  • It can be recycled

So, while it’s not the perfect option, it’s better than plastic alternatives.

Adam & Eve / LovehoneyTwo major sex toy distributors. All their options are NOT 100% green, but there are plenty of toys spread throughout their sites that are fine. Things like 100% silicone, wood, ceramic, glass etc. Just make sure you do your research before you buy.

Crystal Delights – They focus on high-quality, well-crafted glass toys. This stuff won’t shatter.

AsYouLikeIt – Is an eco-conscious online seller that is worth checking out

Nobessence – These are good for those who want to go the wood route. The finish is “proprietary”, and therefore not disclosed, so…

Leaf Vibes – It won best eco-toy at the sexual health expo.

JimmyJane – They try their best to reduce the carbon footprint of their toys.

NJoy – All their products are medical-grade stainless steel. Metal biodegrades BUT the fine dust can be classified as a contaminant to the environment.

I don’t know the specifics of Njoy’s manufacturing processes, but it’s at least something to consider in lieu of worse materials.

GASM by Lelo – Made from “recycled car tired and wood pulp”, it started as an April Fool’s Day joke that tricked everyone (including their internal sales team), but it might be a reality soon.

  • Rechargeable batteries are always better than disposable
  • Take care of your sex toys properly so you don’t have to replace it as often
  • Look into organic lubricant – there aren’t many on the market, but they do exist
  • Try solar power charging options
  • Research is your best line of defense

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Recently, I bought my husband a male masturbator. Standard and long-known lanterns have long won the hearts of millions of men. But there is a masturbator in this line that they buy and use most often – this is Fleshlight Pink Lady. This masturbator is durable, pleasant to the touch and as close as

I like how you talked about how silicone sex toys arent biodegradable but they are still better than plastic. My wife and I have been thinking about getting more into sex toys as a way to mix things up. I will make sure to keep this tip in mind as we search for the right sex shop.
