As much as we try to keep our personal lives away from prying eyes, sometimes things slip out of our control – especially in “triggering places”. That was the case for a couple caught having sex in a military museum in Poland. The museum’s management and the public’s reaction to the incident have been nothing short of a hilarious mixture of reactions.

The History of Fort Gerhard – Yes, Please Read, It’s Quite Interesting… and Relevant to the Sex Parts
“Gerhard’s Fort – also known as the Eastern Fort, is one of the forts of the Świnoujście Fortress. It is one of the best preserved nineteenth-century Prussian coastal forts in Europe and since 2010 it has been the seat of the Museum of Coastal Defense in Świnoujście – the largest private institution of this type in Poland, gathering over 2000 exhibits related to the development of the Świnoujście Fortress over the last 300 years.”

The original fort was located in such a convenient location that it stood strong for four centuries of military service. These optimal conditions made for the first modern fortifications of the time were built more than a kilometer from the mouth of the straight. But it was only a wood and earth structure as well as considered to be a semi-permanent building.
This ended up being damaged at the end of a 7-year War. Surprisingly this is still the most durable and oldest preserved part of the fortification.
In the first half of the 19th century, after the end of the Napoleonic Wars, not much was going on. So the fort wasn’t updated until 1837. And then in 1846, it was decided to convert the space into a naval Fortress. Remember that this original location was at the mouth of a straight so a naval structure made perfect sense.
Time for An Upgrade
In the mid-19 the Fortress received another upgrade – which was, at the time, considered to be incredibly modern – with each section of the fort and battery being designed to perfectly fulfill whatever task it was designated for.
However, these individual sections were also intentionally bound together for a unified concept to defend the coast.
These projects went from 1848 to 1859. It was also one of the two key constructions of the Fortress. On one hand, it was intended to defend the entrance of the port (and built to mimic Prussian characteristics of fortifications at that time). The other being, obviously, a place to house naval ships and artillery.
Next, we get to the 70s of the 19th century when armored ships were the new form of defense. They changed the course of the moat and built new ramparts, 11 new artillery positions, and multiple new cannon positions. Extra defenses included new ammunition magazines, powder magazines, barrack rooms, shelter firehouses for cannons, etc.
When electricity and telegraph lines were brought into the fort it became even more essential when The Great War came and allowed them to participate in key ways in a new kind of warfare.
After World War I, under the Treaty of Versailles, the fort was partially disarmed and passed to the management of the German Navy and played a partial war role until the end of World War II. It was used by the Russians. After that when they left the fort it was turned into warehouses and then abandoned. The new birth of Fort Gerhard came in the first half of 2001 when it started its new life as a tourist spot.
How Does This Tie Into Couples Caught Having Sex?
So here’s where things turn a little bit weird. First of all, having sex in public places isn’t really shocking. Every adult content site has an entire “caught having sex porn” category dedicated to the idea. There are sex toys that allow you to have discrete sexual experiences in public. But all of this should be done with responsibility and respect and understanding that you shouldn’t be in a place where you would not get caught especially from people who would not want to see or should not see. Then there’s the legal aspect where sex in public is just a no-no.
So, Fort Gerhard has a long history it had, a lot of space. It also has hundreds of years worth of military items. From guns to uniforms and cannons to maps (and let’s be honest, some of those war-type things turn people on). They also have displays to mimic certain situations of certain time periods.
This military museum is already popular. And the items in it are extremely valuable, and in some cases priceless. This is why management decided to install CCTV cameras throughout the fort to keep a better eye on their Museum.
However, they found was not at all what they expected. Instead of people trying to sneak souvenirs, they found a couple in a dark corner getting it on. And not just that, over the course of a month, they found two more couples engaging in naughty acts in the shadowy corners of the museum’s exhibits.
The Museum’s Reaction to the Shenanigans
The Museum’s reaction was, on one hand, what you would expect – they posted signs saying that CCTV cameras were monitoring all areas of the museum. Also, on their social media and signs throughout the establishment, they would put reminders to visitors basically not to have sex. However, it was their wording that was kind of adorable.
- “Our guests are kindly requested… how can we put it… no ars amandi [the art of love] in the museum, please!’
- “We understand that unique exhibits and uniformed service can give you chills, EXCITATION, and excitement,” part of the message reads.
- “Guests in love, please understand – most of the Exhibits in our museum are objects ‘born’ many years ago and subject to completely different moral standards. Conservative, even orthodox and restrained. We do not expose them to discomfort!”
Museum director, Piotr Piwowarczyk, was adamant that people behave themselves but still had some light-hearted comments of his own. Even though the footage showed something that floored the entire staff.
“In less than a month we have already had three recordings of lovers engaged in trysts. Visitors to the fort have various temperaments, some of them very conservative. We don’t want them to be shocked during their visit by stumbling across a couple engaged in lustful antics.”

That’s right, there were WAY more freaky people than expected.
“In less than a month since the beginning of the holidays we’ve already had three recordings of lovers engaged in trysts.” Suggesting the dark areas may give people the illusion of intimacy. “Or maybe it’s a chakra?” he joked. “Perhaps this place releases energy in the area of the body responsible for sex?”

One museum spokesperson helpfully suggested guests who find themselves caught up in the moment could take a walk to the nearby beaches.
What was the Public’s Reaction?
Well, you can imagine what some of the comments were. A few called the acts “sick”, but there were plenty of hilarious gems (keep in mind some are translated from Polish)…

Caught In Public At Fort Gerhard – End Thoughts
It was nice to see management be firm be understanding about the situation – so I give them a personal “Bravo!” But anyone feeling frisky also needs to remember that it IS a public place that in Poland that will land with a public indecency charge. Those who get caught could face detention, a non-custodial sentence, or a 1,500 zloty (€314) fine.
Oh, and sex on the beach would land you the same “lewd acts in public” charge – so forget that suggestions. One writer gave the idea of having a private room so couples could blow off some steam LOL.
And let’s not forget there are those with literal clothing fetishes – including military uniforms. And before you judge, anything who’s ever got a twinge seeing a handsome man in a cop uniform or people who can’t get enough of cheerleading outfits … I’m looking at you *wink. And we can’t leave out mechanophilia/mechaphilia, which is an attraction to some kind of machinery like cars, airplanes, tanks, and whatnot.
So it stands to reason there would be at least a few artillery sparks flying within those walls.
