In this case, &#8220;super sperm&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what do boars and sperm quality have to do with each other?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apparently, a drug called Taxifolin (TAX).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-taxifolin\"><strong>WHAT IS TAXIFOLIN?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers have been using <strong>Taxifolin <\/strong>(also known as dihydroquercetin), which is a natural <em>flavonoid<\/em> that can be found in things like fruit, vegetables, wine, tea, and cocoa. It\u2019s also found in vinegars aged in cherry wood, non-glutinous rice boiled with adzuki bean, and several kinds of conifer trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em><strong>Flavonoids (or bioflavonoids; from the Latin word flavus, meaning yellow, their color in nature) are a class of polyphenolic secondary metabolites found in plants, and thus commonly consumed in the diets of humans.<\/strong><\/em><\/p><cite><em>~ wikipedia<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But when it comes to uber-health, it\u2019s apparently showing a lot of promise in the management of inflammation, tumors, microbial infections, oxidative stress, cardiovascular, and liver disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which brings us another step closer to the piggy correlation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cancer-study-tangent\"><strong>CANCER STUDY TANGENT<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since TAX has strong anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, anti-virus, and even anti-tumor properties, scientists were eager to see if it could be used as a cancer treatment. But there were also curiosities if the flavonoid could have other benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And somewhere in the world, a room full of people made the jump from cancer studies to fertility and sperm studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fmicb.2022.1020628\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">group of experts <\/a>from Belgium and China decided to see if the TAX feed additive for Duroc boars would do anything to the sperm quality. Long story short, it had some pretty amazing reactions (sorry science-y terms incoming, but you\u2019ll get the gist)\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lovense.com\/sex-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/duroc-piglet.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8756\" width=\"733\" height=\"412\"\/><figcaption>Credit: britishpigs.org.uk<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Significantly <strong>increased sperm motility<\/strong> by the elevation of the protein levels such as <em>ZAG, PKA, CatSpe<\/em>r, and <em>p-ERK<\/em> for sperm quality.<\/li><li><strong>Improved \u201cbeneficial\u201d microbes<\/strong> such as <em>Intestinimonas, Coprococcus, Butyrivibrio, and Clostridium_XlVa<\/em> at the <em>Genus<\/em> level.<\/li><li><strong>Reduced \u201charmful\u201d intestinal bacteria<\/strong> such as <em>Prevotella, Howardella, Mogibacterium, and Enterococcus.<\/em><\/li><li><strong>Increased blood concentration of testosterone derivatives, antioxidants<\/strong> such as melatonin and betaine, unsaturated fatty acids such as <em>DHA<\/em>, and beneficial amino acids such as <em>proline<\/em>.<\/li><li>Decreased 10 different kinds of negative bile acids in the plasma.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, TAX made a piggy super sperm by doing great things to gut microbes and blood metabolites. In the short term, they think that they can use this to improve the breeding rates of Duroc boars (which are used as a meat source).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-super-sperm-and-world-fertility\"><strong>SUPER SPERM AND WORLD FERTILITY<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Okay, the term super sperm is obviously hyperbolic. But what isn\u2019t an exaggeration is that the world fertility rates have dropped by scary amounts over the last few decades. This is mostly due to our increased use of chemicals and other nasty things we can\u2019t seem to live without. That and horrible environmental conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yes, overpopulation is another issue too, and a serious one. But that\u2019s a different conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The assumption is that if humans could get things under control, it would be nice if we could still have offspring. So, making sure sperm quality is one thing some scientists are focusing on.
