Learn A Different Kind of Love"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everywhere we go we are surrounded by concepts of love and romance (and sex). Romance books and movies, Valentine\u2019s day, and an endless sea of \u201cdream wedding\u201d ideas. Our society puts heavy emphasis on finding a partner to have a romantic connection with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what about those who don\u2019t really have that kind of bond with people?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, thanks to the burst of helpful language the LGBTQ+ community has brought about\/shined a light on, we have a handy-dandy word for that. It\u2019s called Grey Romantic.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-exactly-is-a-grey-romantic\"><strong>WHAT EXACTLY IS A GREY ROMANTIC?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Well, first, let\u2019s define a few other terms that will make the definition make more sense (especially if you\u2019re new to these terms).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>AROMANTIC<\/strong> \u2013 is a spectrum for those who have very little or no romantic attraction to others. Or they do not feel\/relate to romance in the standard ways or levels that society feels are \u201cnormal\u201d.<\/li><li><strong>DEMIROMANTIC<\/strong> \u2013 is another group that sits on the Aromantic scale. It describes someone who will not feel a romantic connection to someone unless there is a deep, emotional bond.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"background-color:#0792e330\"><p><strong>Greyromantics<\/strong> sit on the Aromantic spectrum, but feel <em>\u201c<\/em><strong><em>there are parts of their experience that aren&#8217;t fully described by the word\u00a0aromantic.\u201d<\/em> <\/strong><\/p><cite><em>lgbtqia.wiki<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"they-also-might\"><strong>They also might\u2026<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Consider themselves not purely aromantic or maybe demiromantic<\/li><li>Only experience society\u2019s idea of true love only a couple of times in their life<\/li><li>Feel it, but only under very specific circumstances<\/li><li>Experience romance very weakly<\/li><li>Be unsure where the line is between romantic and non-romantic attraction<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"background-color:#0792e330\"><p><strong>Greyromantic and aromantic folks feel alienated from the dominant experience. <\/strong>If you\u2019re constantly watching shows and reading books that prize romantic exchanges, written with the assumption that all people have the same expectations about love and romance, but you actually don\u2019t feel compelled to find romance in your own life, it can feel dislocating. <\/p><p><strong>Nothing is wrong with you, you\u2019re not broken, and what a frickin\u2019 treat it is to know that something doesn\u2019t resonate with you and that\u2019s not part of what feels good.<\/strong><\/p><cite><em>Sex Therapist Claudia Johnson<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, it\u2019s very important to remember that this does not cover sexual attraction (which is a different category altogether). \u00a0Someone who is grey romantic might still feel intense sexual attraction to someone else. And, it could be someone of the opposite or same gender. An example could be grey-homoromantic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, getting back to the idea of love. This doesn\u2019t mean grey romantics don\u2019t feel love. They are still capable of loving family, friends, children, etc. They just might not feel it towards a partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>:<em> It\u2019s also spelled\/called greyaromantic, grayromantic, or grayaromantic. Grey comes from the term \u201cgrey area\u201d, which is widely used by the community to express flexibility or exploration.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"looking-at-the-flag\"><strong>LOOKING AT THE FLAG<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><br>I love LGBTQ+ flags. Even if the designs are simple (like most flags), there\u2019s so much thought that goes into them. And I adore how they use hues that are not from the traditional flag pallet. The grey romantic flag is a great example. There are, however, a few versions out there \u2013 mostly because of their evolution towards something more all-encompassing or simplified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>No one knows who created the first one. But we do know it was based on the grey sexual flag (substituting in green instead of purple).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next one was designed by <strong>\u201cAngel\u201d on December 3rd, 2020. <\/strong>The different colors represented the different levels of attraction, with white being in the middle and meaning community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next was made by <strong>Apollo on November 21st, 2020, <\/strong>with a similar idea using similar colors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, the most recent was submitted by <strong>Nyoomster on the LGBTA+ wiki discord On June 28.<\/strong> The idea was to keep the obvious grey, but the darker greens meant an occasional attraction, the lighter being further on the Aro spectrum or no romance at all. And for those out there who might find the same connection, it\u2019s important to remember this\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Being a grey romantic is something you ARE \u2013 not something you\u2019re <em>temporarily<\/em> going through (like me).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then again, I thought back on everyone I had been attracted to in the past, and it got me wondering how many of the guys I had truly been romantically attracted to (as opposed to sexually or wanting to be with for security). And, now that I\u2019m emotionally healthy and stable, the push to feel romance isn\u2019t there as much. Grey romantics or those in the Aro-family don\u2019t need \u201cthat\u201d kind of love to be happy. And I\u2019m finding that makes sense to me more and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This got me thinking that even if you\u2019re not on the spectrum, having loving relationships that are not romantic (like friends and family) can be enormously fulfilling. And even more so, learning self-love is vital to being truly happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Being in a society that goes crazy around romance, grey romantics (or those on the Aro spectrum) might be looked at as oddities.
