The last few decades, sexuality has taken another enormous leap into the spotlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Aside from old conceptions and discrimination, there are also a lot of myths and misinformation floating around. And let\u2019s be fair, sometimes it\u2019s hard for people to keep up with the evolving terminology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today, we are going to look at some common myths about asexuality\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
First, the definition<\/b> <\/span>\u2013 An asexual person does not feel sexual attraction <\/em>to anyone. That\u2019s it. Simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n IT\u2019S A CHOICE<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n There\u2019s a big difference between choosing something and being oriented toward something. Think of it like choosing to turn your car left and the needle of a compass naturally pointing north. Asexuals do not \u201cchoose\u201d their sexuality. It\u2019s simply part of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n THEY HAVE A DISORDER<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n Many things from being gay to loving BDSM have been lumped into \u201cyou have a mental problem if you\u2019re like this\u201d category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n THEY ARE TRAUMATIZED<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n It might be easy to think that someone is avoiding sex because they\u2019re scared of something. It\u2019s easier for some tiny brains to process. However, a large majority of people have NOT experienced a trauma in their past. There\u2019s no repression or avoidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n THEY ARE JUST CELIBATE<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n This comes back to the \u201cchoice vs orientation\u201d conversation. Being celibate is a choice to not have intercourse. Abstaining means you\u2019re waiting. These are not the same things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n THEY HATE SEX<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n No. They just don\u2019t feel sexual attraction<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n THEY AREN\u2019T AFFECTIONATE<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n Quite the contrary. Romantic orientation is different from sexual orientation. Imagine wanting to have sex with bad boys but not wanting to fall in love with them \u2013 sorry, I know it\u2019s not the best example, but it\u2019s easier to use common analogies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You can love someone but not want to get freaky with them. As a side note, the word you\u2019re looking for (if someone doesn\u2019t have interest in romantic relationships) is \u201cAromantic<\/i>\u201d \u2013 not to be confused with \u201caromatic\u201d. Heehee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n THEY DON\u2019T MASTURBATE<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n Their genitals aren\u2019t broken. An asexual can touch themselves and have an orgasm \u2013 and orgasms can feel good. Some might partake, some might not. It can be to relief stress or just for the pleasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For example, most people can understand the difference between just wanting a personal orgasm instead of getting one through human contact. These things can be separate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n GOOD SEX WILL \u201cFIX\u201d THEM<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n I might not be asexual, but even I loathe this one. It\u2019s like saying, \u201cAll she needs is a good dick.\u201d Things are not \u201cfixed\u201d by anyone\u2019s penis or vagina. To think otherwise can be damaging. Besides our \u201cA\u201d friends don\u2019t need fixing, because there is nothing wrong with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n THEY ARE LONELY AND UNFULFILLED<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s quite possible to have a loving and fulfilling relationship without sexual desire or contact. You can adore someone without wanting to bump uglies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n EVERYONE FEELS LIKE THAT SOMETIMES<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n Gack. Careful with this one (well, careful with all of them), but this ranks in the top 5 of many Aces. Having a dry spell or a low libido is not even on the same continent of comparisons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n IT\u2019S A PHASE THAT WILL PASS<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n See point #1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n THEY ARE ALL VIRGINS<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n Let\u2019s look at this from another angle. Let\u2019s say you\u2019re definitely heterosexual. You a boy that likes girls or a girl that likes boys \u2013 \u201chaving your V-card punched\u201d (read that from one woman\u2019s post and I had to find a way to use that saying somehow in real life) isn\u2019t connected with sexual attraction. Some might be virgins, some might not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n IT\u2019S THE SAME AS TRANSSEXUAL OR TRANSGENDER<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n Gender is different from orientation. An Ace can be cis, trans, agendered, fluid, or whatever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n THEY DON’T NEED TO COME OUT<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n In this world of harsh judgment, closed minds, old thinking, and heavy misinformation, it can be very difficult for someone to declare they are an Ace. Our world is so sex-centered (hell, even my income comes from writing a sex blog, for heaven\u2019s sake) there is a \u201ccoming out\u201d conversation or announcement that some might have to go through.
