I had written an article on latex vacuum beds before \u2013 and I\u2019ve wanted one ever since. However, nearly every model\u2019s price tag made me cry. They\u2019re SO expensive. Even the few DIY kits out there are a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I mean, I get it \u2013 they\u2019re running a business and things cost money, but when I looked at the materials to make one myself, I saw just how much of a markup customer\u2019s are paying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And what are you paying for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s mostly people\u2019s time to make it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is good news \u2013 because if you\u2019re A. not scared of making things yourself and B. willing to put in about three days of work (on and off), you can have your own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MATERIALS LIST<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of your base materials will be things you buy once and don\u2019t have to repurchase for a while (like a rotary cutter). Others will be consumed during the project (like glue). Also, if you are lucky enough to have someone to borrow these things from, you will save even more money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"\u25ba LATEX<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 You want  0.4mm thickness, 5-6 meters long and 1 meter wide<\/strong> (in whatever color you want). Don\u2019t go thicker. It won\u2019t mold to the body as well. And don\u2019t go thinner because it will be harder to work with (especially if you haven\u2019t glued latex before).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I bought mine from RadicalRubber.com <\/strong>(they had excellent customer service).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NOTE: <\/strong><\/span>There are places that sell them wider, but it\u2019s far more expensive and you can get by with one meter no problem for a normal, one-person bed.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba ROTARY CUTTER x1<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 A round blade that helps you cut through the latex without creating ragged\/weak points along the seam. Amazon or craft stores have them. I found mine in a hardware store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba SCISSORS  x1<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 Sharp ones to help you cut the breathing holes and valve holes or patches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba SEAM ROLLER<\/strong> <\/span>x1<\/span> <\/strong>\u2013 To press down the latex after you\u2019ve glued it. Amazon or leatherworking stores will have them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"\u25ba GLUE<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 This will probably be the HARDEST part \u2013 getting the right glue.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The standard is solvent-based<\/strong> rubber cement<\/strong> that produces a strong bond between natural latex sheets. You can use water-based<\/strong> as well, but the bond will be weaker (better suited for stuff what won\u2019t stretch or be stressed that much).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
