But there are also a monumental number of prerequisites, hoops, and barriers to get through first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#d70072\"><span style=\"font-size: 26px;\"><strong>AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFICATION<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some things that will put you immediately into the \u201cno\u201d pile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Having a hereditary disease<\/li><li>Being too young or too old (18-39 is the threshold)<\/li><li>Being too short (most recipients ask for tall donors)<\/li><li>Being too tall (way above average)<\/li><li>Being an IV drug user (or any drug user)<\/li><li>Being very under or overweight<\/li><li>Having visited some \u201cat risk\u201d areas for certain diseases<\/li><li>Being unhealthy in general<\/li><li>Taking certain medications that affect fertility<\/li><li>Being too active (exercises that can hurt sperm)<\/li><li>Being adopted (no family medical history)<\/li><li>Being gay or sometimes bisexual (horribly homophobic, I know)<\/li><li>Having been exposed to HIV, hepatitis B and C, HTLV, syphilis, genital herpes and\/or genital warts.<\/li><li>Being uneducated (you\u2019ll need at least some kind of college degree or higher \u2013 some clinics even only accept ivy league schools)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The health ones are easy to understand. The gay one just makes my head explode. However, the other ones might leave some people confused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the most part,<strong> it comes down to demand<\/strong>. Clients ask for certain things and the clinics then screen for those traits. In some places, Caucasian skin is wanted while Asian tones are demanded in others, and so on. The \u201ceducation\u201d one is more of a sales gimmick for the clinics to justify their high price tags \u2013 because obviously, your education has nothing to do with your sperm count or strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the figurative rub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>99.9% of places will only let you donate to a place that is close to you. <\/strong>So if they say no, you\u2019re out of luck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#d70072\"><span style=\"font-size: 26px;\"><strong>THE SCREENING PROCESS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>If you manage to make it past the first hurdle,<strong> there\u2019s a gauntlet of questions after.<\/strong> You can also expect it to take from 8 weeks to 6 months depending on the clinic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A physical exam, and one around every 6 months while you\u2019re donating<\/li><li>Semen samples to test if the sperm is healthy<\/li><li>Another blood test for genetic conditions<\/li><li>An extensive medical history (2 to 3 generations ago)<\/li><li>Interview on personal sexual history<\/li><li>A psychological exam<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Psychological tests?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yep \u2013 mostly about your thoughts on information privacy, why you want do donate, your relationship with a recipient (if any), your partner\u2019s feelings on donation, etc. But there\u2019s also screening for actual mental problems or conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#d70072\"><span style=\"font-size: 26px;\"><strong>YOU PASSED? YAY! THERE\u2019S MORE\u2026<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s assume you\u2019ve found yourself into this VIP club. It doesn&#8217;t end there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sperm donation is a <strong>huge<\/strong> <strong>commitment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll be expected to donate at least once a week (maybe even 2 to 3 times) for a period of time ranging from a few months to a year (because it can often take multiple inseminations to get a woman pregnant). On top of this, you\u2019ll have to stay healthy, eat right, avoid smoking or drinking alcohol, take suggested supplements, drink plenty of water, and anything else that helps keep your donation in the best condition possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You also can\u2019t ejaculate 2 to 5 days before your donation. So, if you do the math, this means that you won\u2019t be having sex for a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#d70072\"><span style=\"font-size: 26px;\"><strong>DONATIN<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 26px;\"><strong>G IS HARDER THAN YOU THINK<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though you\u2019re in a private room, sperm banks aren\u2019t known for their sexy atmospheres. They DO provide material, but it might not be to your taste (although you can totally bring your own \u2013 even an external sex toy).
