Latex clothing might be a staple of dominatrixes and kinksters, but the material is slowly gaining ground in everyday street wear \u2013 from cute, simple jackets to red carpet goddess gowns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That being said, it\u2019s very<\/em> tricky fabric to wear and care for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you curious about integrating this material into your wardrobe, there\u2019s much to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s dive in\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. WHY TRY LATEX?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s a pile of reasons why latex lovers are happy to shell out time and money to get their hands on this material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • It\u2019s light, slinky, and shiny \u2013 a nice step away from normal textiles.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
    • No matter what size or shape you are, the tight-fitting designs will smooth curves, lift bums, and show off boobs.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
      • They are statement pieces that draw a lot of attention.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
        • The thin material is often described as a \u201csecond skin\u201d and touching someone over their latex clothing is a mix between intimate contact and separation \u2013 you\u2019re touching someone but not really touching them.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          2. USEFUL FACTS ABOUT LATEX<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          There are two kinds of latex clothing\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          MOLDED<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 A manufacture dips a mold into liquid latex rubber. It\u2019s the preferred method for complex designs with heavy contours, like masks, hoods, or gloves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          SHEET<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 A pattern and body measurements are used, and separate pieces cut from a larger sheet. The pieces are then glued together to form the final garment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          There is no \u201cone is better than the other\u201d because\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Although poorly made molded clothing can have an uneven thickness and weak spots that are prone to faster tearing, well-made designs can be just as viable sheet garments. Also, poorly constructed sheet clothing can fall apart or tear easily if they\u2019re not glued properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          The same goes for the fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Both can have wonderful or terrible results \u2013 depending on the accuracy of the measurements and the construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          FACT<\/span>:<\/strong> Rubber and latex clothing is NOT the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          3. GETTING THE RIGHT FIT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \n\n\n\n

          If you\u2019re looking for your first latex item, and aren\u2019t sure what to buy, I would recommend something simple, like a skirt, stocking, or a pair of shorts. They\u2019re fairly easy to fit and won\u2019t cost as much as a full catsuit or dress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          It\u2019s also important to get the correct measurements<\/strong>.<\/span> This means using a soft measuring tape and following either the store\u2019s guide (which is preferable) or a generic body measurement chart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          IMPORTANT: <\/strong><\/span>Check, double check, and triple check your numbers before you click on the \u201cbuy\u201d button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Also, read the store guide carefully for other tips and tricks they recommend<\/strong><\/span>. You want things to fit snug. If it\u2019s too tight, it will tear. If it\u2019s too loose, you lose the clingy effect that will flatter your body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          The general rule is \u201cget something a couple centimeters smaller than your measurements\u201d. But, when in doubt, email the store!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          4. GETTING INTO YOUR LATEX DREAM<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \n\n\n\n

          Putting on latex is no easy feat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Many of the rips and holes you\u2019ll end up with is because you were too rough. Even long nails or rings can easily destroy the fabric. Then there\u2019s the natural friction from your skin. So, when you\u2019re getting ready, follow these steps\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          1. GET CLEAN<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 Have a shower, wash well, dry well<\/strong>, and do NOT put on any moisturizer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          2. FORGET UNDERWEAR<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 No need for panties or bras etc. The fit should be snug enough that you don\u2019t need it, AND it will be so tight that EVERYTHING will show through. Wearing latex means going 100% commando.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          3. CHOOSE A PRODUCT <\/span><\/strong> \u2013 Unscented talc powder, silicone lubricant, water-based lubricant, or a dressing aid (liquid specifically made for getting into latex clothing).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Pjur, Gloss, and Eros are some make this. Put a light dusting of powder or a thin layer of lubricant\/dressing aid on your body and on the INSIDE of the garment before you get in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          4. TAKE OFF ALL JEWELRY<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 No rings, bracelets etc. If you have really long fingernails, wear soft gloves, or, at minimum, be REALLY careful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          5. NO FINGERS<\/span> <\/strong>\u2013 Grabbing the material by your fingers will guarantee ripping or permanent marks. Instead, slid your hand in between you and the material and (with an open palm) slowly<\/strong> wriggle, push, and slide your way in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          6. TAKE YOUR TIME<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 Seriously, never rush your dressing<\/strong>. Make the act of getting into your latex a sexy event, not a chore.  Because, whether new or a veteran, if you rush things, you\u2019ll tear things.  It\u2019s also a good idea to have someone there to help you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          7. SHINEY GOOD <\/strong><\/span>\u2013 Dull latex looks sad. When you\u2019re ready to go out, dust off excess powder (if you used it) and gently wipe on a coating of latex shine (Pujr makes some) or silicone lubricant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          TIP:<\/strong> <\/span>Latex is a magnet for pet hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          5. HOW TO WEAR IT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \n\n\n\n

          First, latex isn\u2019t breathable<\/strong>, at all. So, you\u2019re going to sweat A LOT<\/strong>. There\u2019s no getting around it. Also, it will be warm to wear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          However, this doesn\u2019t mean it will keep you warm if you change to cooler temperatures \u2013 you\u2019ll just get a chill and then be very aware of the sweat that has accumulated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Dress in reasonable layers <\/strong>so you can add or remove as necessary \u2013 this means a jacket, shawl, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Also, it\u2019s worth pointing out that people always want to touch it.<\/strong> Even if they don\u2019t want to wear it, they want to touch it. Be aware of your comfort zone and make sure others respect your personal boundaries (and ask permission before touching). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

          6. ALLERGIC REACTIONS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \n\n\n\n

          Another reason to start small is to find out if you have a latex allergy.<\/strong> And, just because you use latex condoms with no issue, doesn\u2019t mean you can rock the clothing version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Ask for a small square of the maker\u2019s material or get something cheap online and do a spot test against your skin (keep it there for at least a few hours).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Also, there are different kinds of latex, including some VEGAN SAFE stuff, and there might be something out there for those that have a sensitivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          7. HOW TO GET OUT OF IT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \n\n\n\n

          This step is A LOT easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Just peel things off. Don\u2019t pull or tear at them. And, if it gets difficult, hop in the shower and let some water run inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          8. HOW TO WASH IT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \n\n\n\n

          If you haven\u2019t figured it out yet, latex is a DELICATE material. Like an orchid, it\u2019s stunning, but if you aren\u2019t careful with it, it wont\u2019 last long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          • Washing should be done as soon as possible after you\u2019ve worn it. <\/strong>Don\u2019t leave it sitting for a couple of days. This can be a light rinse after light wear or a thorough cleaning after many uses or heavy wear.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
            • Wash by hand <\/strong>and\/or with a soft sponge in lukewarm water and gentle dish shop or baby shampoo \u2013 in a plastic bucket, bathtub, or ceramic sink (no metal containers).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
              • Gently wipe<\/em><\/strong> the inside and outside \u2013 don\u2019t scrub.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
                • Rinse well <\/strong>and make sure there is no soap residue left.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
                  • Gently shake off excess water<\/strong> (never ring it out), pat the rest off with a soft towel, and hang on a PLASTIC hanger to finish drying.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
                    • Do NOT dry in sunlight.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
                      <\/div>\n\n\n\n

                      9. PROPER STORAGE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                      \n\n\n\n
                      • Dust with a light coating of talc powder and hang on a soft hanger in a garment bag (preferably black) OR wrap it in acid-free tissue paper and put in a black plastic bag.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
                        • Store it somewhere DARK and DRY.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
                          • Do not store light colored latex with dark or strong colors \u2013 it will stain.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
                            <\/div>\n\n\n\n

                            10. CAREFUL WITH PRINTED LATEX<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                            \n\n\n\n

                            Printed latex is even more delicate than the regular stuff. <\/strong>Do your best to keep friction to a minimum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                            For example, when you\u2019re applying a shine coat, use gentle dabble or light strokes. The same goes for washing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                            There will be natural \u201cwear away\u201d of the print on places like armpits, other garments, handbags etc. It\u2019s inevitable, but you can try to slow down the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                            11. REPAIRING<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                            \n\n\n\n

                            Small tears and pin holes should be dealt with <\/strong><\/span>ASAP<\/span><\/strong>,<\/span> before they turn into bigger (and unsightly) tears and holes. You can find latex clothing repair kits online (and follow the instructions) OR send it into the maker for repairs (if they offer this service).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                            The basic<\/em> materials needed are solvent, acid-free rubber cement, a latex patch, and paintbrush or credit card\/plastic card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
