March 14th<\/sup> is Steak and Blowjob day<\/strong> \u2013 the male counterpart to Valentine\u2019s Day \u2026 and there are some seriously mixed feelings about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s look at some brief backstory, other culture\u2019s practices, and alternative options…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

THE HISTORY OF STEAK & BJ DAY<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The American version of this \u201choliday\u201d started as a concept\/comment in 2002 from radio DJ Tom Birdsey of WFNX Boston, Massachusetts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the British version (Steak and Knobber Day) came about in 1998 from radio host, Dave Rickards, and suggests that it should be held on March 20th<\/sup> instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, several websites have popped up, all claiming they are the \u201coriginal\u201d ST&BJ Day source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The notion is simple \u2013 that women have Valentine\u2019s Day, and are showered with gifts and attention, so there should be a male equivalent as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE RECEPTION<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Obviously, feelings about this day are very mixed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On one hand, people feel that it\u2019s \u201cNeanderthal\u201d and a counter-movement to feminism and equality<\/strong> \u2013 nothing but male privilege inserting itself into the calendar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, whether we want to admit it or not, a majority of Valentine\u2019s Day is focused <\/strong>on<\/strong> women<\/strong>. Yes, there are plenty of couples who both take seriously or don\u2019t care about it at all, but a majority feel it\u2019s a lopsided event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then there is the fact that March ST&BJ Day is also used as a fundraising event to fight breast cancer <\/strong><\/span>\u2013 a fact which some people say doesn\u2019t matter or justify anything because of the perceived vulgarity of the day<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

OTHER CULTURE\u2019S EVENTS  <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A male-centered holiday might feel like a new concept to some, however, they\u2019ve been around for longer than we think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

White Day<\/strong>, for example, is practiced in Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China<\/em>. While men give women gifts on February 14th<\/sup>, women give men the equivalent on March 14th<\/sup> (with an emphasis on white or dark chocolate).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another thing to note is that there doesn\u2019t have to be romantic or sexual atmospheres around this gift exchange. It can simply be a matter of friendship, respect, or social obligation (you got something, so you should give something).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SIDE NOTE:<\/strong> <\/span>Some places like China also have \u201csingles day\u201d, where it\u2019s a celebration of being single. No one is left out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And let\u2019s not forget the separation of Mother\u2019s Day vs. Father\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

COMMERCIALIZATION<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

There is one indisputable fact around ALL these days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are for making money.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

No one can argue that Valentine\u2019s Day is more special, sacred, or pure. There\u2019s the pressure to get something nice, go somewhere nice, and spend money to \u201cprove\u201d your love. It all ends up about money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everything ends up about money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even China\u2019s \u201csingles day\u201d also ends up an enormous sale on places like Taobao or other online markets<\/strong> (November 11th<\/sup> equates to 11.11. And if you know Chinese cultures, they love their meaning with numbers).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

IS THERE A MIDDLE GROUND?  <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

I think the major issue comes from the title \u2013 while February 14th<\/sup> has connotations of romance, the alternative leans towards \u201ca women\u2019s place is cooking in the kitchen and performing in the bedroom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, is the idea of a day for women and a separate one for men such a bad idea?  <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Compromising on a single holiday isn\u2019t bad, but wouldn\u2019t it feel extra nice to have a day just for you? Something like a second birthday. And if on the man\u2019s day, he happens to want beef and fellatio (and his girl is happy to do it), why not? Or, if he wants sailing and seafood, go for that instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are suggestions of a \u201cChicken and <\/strong><\/span>lickin<\/strong><\/span>\u201d day for women as well.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

NOTE:<\/strong> <\/span>This doesn\u2019t even touch on the LGBT community and same-sex couples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

So, it comes down to the following choices:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
