Uncontrollable vibrations, mutations, and embarrassment. <\/span><\/span>Oh<\/span><\/span><\/span> my!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or at least that\u2019s what the current line of hacking projects are insinuating.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is all in regards to a post that has the sex toy world in quite the kerfuffle. Specifically, a term called \u201cScrewdriving\u201d (Bluetooth hacking sex toys) which is used by the Pen Test Partners<\/em> who make it a point to test the security of various products. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this case, it was the Lovense HUSH.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which in and of itself is an essential <\/span><\/span>thing.<\/span><\/span><\/span> Products should<\/em> be pushed for as much consumer protection as possible and these kinds of tests point out possible flaws so companies can improve their designs. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But \u2026 (yes, you saw that coming)\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scenario that was presented made me sigh \u2013 not to mention roll my eyes when I found out that some journalists gave us 2 HOURS<\/strong> (taking into account there\u2019s a time difference between countries) to “respond” to their article before they published it. Bad form, people.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, let\u2019s sort out the bedlam and fear.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does Lovense, as well as many competitors, use BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) chips? <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes. This is common in nearly all wearable or Bluetooth vibrators<\/a> sex toys and the current industry standard as well as an upgrade <\/span><\/span>over<\/span><\/span><\/span> the older 3.0 version. The main reason for using this is (as the name states) to make sure the device doesn\u2019t drain the battery as badly.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are they 100% secure? No. Of course not. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

No Bluetooth device is \u2026 because it\u2019s Bluetooth<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

BLE chips are meant for efficiency and as much security as the current technology allows.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This takes us to the next part\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did they hack the Lovense Hush butt plug?<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yep. And boy did that make me sigh again. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clear away all the coding images and language like \u201cvictim\u201d and \u201cunsafe\u201d, what are you really left with?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lot of missing information about the rest of the toy and app design as well as easy steps you can take to omit this possibility (if you\u2019re that terrified of the concept).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

#1. IT TAKES TIME AND RESOURCES<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

You need your BLE sniffing hardware (as PTP stated), which the average person doesn\u2019t even know about. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hacker also needs to study the Lovense protocols before they can send any commands to the toy (which can take quite a bit of time and a significant degree of experience).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

#2. IF THE TOY IS ON AND CONNECTED, YOU\u2019RE FINE<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hackers would need to walk\/drive around the city hoping someone has a teledildonic toy that is on but NOT connected<\/strong> to any phone.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s rare to encounter this situation because if a user is wearing it out of the house it needs to be connected to the app in order to function, and that\u2019s the entire purpose of wearing it outside.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if it\u2019s on and connected to your phone, the hacking can\u2019t happen because it can only be controlled by one device at a time, aka the phone you\u2019re connected to.<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

#3. PROXIMITY IS EVERYTHING<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, you have to be 30 feet (10 meters) or less<\/em> with a clear line of sight<\/strong> \u2013 Bluetooth signals don\u2019t travel through obstacles well, things like walls \u2026 or thick clothes while sitting in a chair.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second, if they move, you have to follow<\/em> them and hope they don\u2019t go in another room.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

#4. STILL SCARED OF THE IDEA OF HACKING?<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The whole ordeal seems to revolve around having it inside you and buzzing without your permission.<\/strong> And I can completely understand how that would scare off people and feed into some pretty hefty fearmongering.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The solutions are simple:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • If it’s in the bag, the power is off and can\u2019t be hacked<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • If the toy is on and in your bag, turn it off<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • If you\u2019re going to wear it outside, make sure it\u2019s connected to the app<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • If you\u2019re wearing it at home, remember Bluetooth signals are crap through walls. They would need to sit right outside your window. And, if you’re wearing it at home, it should be connected to your phone anyway.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Then go outside, find the person, and kick their ass for being a pervert.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    *Anyone with the skills to hack beyond <\/em>that (specifically while it\u2019s connected<\/em>) will not be interested in a sex toy, more likely something with a bank account <\/em>attached to it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    WHAT\u2019S ALL THE HUBBUB, BUB?<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    My point is, out of all the things to worry about, a vibrating toy would be low on the list<\/em>. If someone took control, it wouldn\u2019t drain your retirement fund or send nudes to your boss and co-workers. It would just buzz.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    My<\/em> concern with BLE\u2019s would be…<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Heart monitors, industrial monitoring sensors, geography-based targeting promotions (iBeacon)<\/em>, and other devices that could cause serious damage<\/em>. They also mentioned sex toys that can give video<\/strong> feedback<\/em>, and I agree stuff like this needs<\/em> next level security.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    But out of all the things to get worked up over\u2026 butt plugs\u2026?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Really?<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    To \u201chack\u201d a vibrating sex toy and then insinuate is a “<\/em>serious breach of security” is like picking the lock on your parents\u2019 bedroom and them turning it into the Pentagon.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    With any technology, if someone wants it bad<\/em> enough, they will find a way, and those people want way more than to make your sex toy buzz.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I’ll also add one final observation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
