I recently stumbled upon a piece of pretty devastating sex toy news\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fucking Sculptures of Berkeley, California \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2026 has closed for business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For those of you who don\u2019t know who they are, these guys were creators of some pretty amazing soda-lime glass dildos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And although many people cringe at the idea of putting something glass in places where the sun doesn\u2019t shine…<\/p>\n\n\n\n
they were among a handful of sellers that actually sold something of quality<\/em> <\/strong>(materials, crafting methods, etc.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Breakage<\/em> would probably be the first thing that people worry about. However, they made a point of making sure their products were body safe (under normal use) \u2013 even going as far as dropping test toys on the floor to test their structural integrity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, the fact they were very environmentally conscious<\/strong> of everything, right down to their packaging, was another plus that set them apart as something special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Getting one of these was an investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was also your own personal piece of kinky art (no two pieces being exactly the same), so much that you could have it on your fireplace mantle and people wouldn\u2019t have the faintest idea you got freaky with it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
And you can\u2019t friggin\u2019 get them anymore<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No curly unicorn-like swirls, no glitter or marbling, not even tours around where they made them. The only place you can probably find them is in any of the commercial sex shops that bought their toys for resale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My thought as to why<\/em> they closed?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
(I actually emailed politely asking why, but no answer)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
They didn\u2019t outright say (just that they are \u201cmoving on\u201d), but my guess is that they had the same problem that other small businesses have – and I\u2019m not talking about 99% of the crap you find on Etsy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I bet it was the inability to compete with a huge<\/em> sex toy market that can churn out hundreds or thousands<\/em> of products in a day <\/strong>\u2013 regardless of quality \u2013 in some far-off country that can charge less than minimum wage to its workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bleh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not enough people are willing to support these kinds of places to keep them afloat \u2013 the time and price tag that is attached with those who care about making something that won\u2019t give our orifices cancer or make them mutate into something out of Japanese hentai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As an artist, I can fully relate to the struggle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I can relate to wanting to shove my pen into the eye of someone who wants to pay Amazon discount bin prices for everything<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then again, I could be totally wrong. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maybe they just wanted to make other things or move on to another field. Perhaps there was personal stuff that made operating a self-owned business impossible. Who knows \u2013 everyone is being very quiet on the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So, now we are left with one less player on the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And one less item on my Christmas list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What\u2019s the point of this impromptu eulogy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I have no idea.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
I could say, \u201cGo out and support the little guy.\u201d<\/em> But there honestly aren\u2019t many of them left \u2013 and I\u2019m not counting 99% of the crap you find on Etsy from people who have no idea what they are making and just want to turn a fast buck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I guess the only thing I can say is this\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
