It\u2019s either gross captivation or utter repulsion, gagging, trypophobia episode, &nbsp;and refusal to watch any further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have somehow found myself in the first category and wondering what the hell is happening as a dermatologist or YouTuber takes their thumbs to a bulbous mound and squeezes until they draw out something can only be described as a yellow or black worm escaping an oily den &#8230; or a Tootsie Roll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s look at possible reasons why it&#8217;s fascinating&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 26px;\">WHAT&#8217;S UP WITH POPPING LUV?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until I saw one particular reaction that was damn near <em>orgasmic<\/em>&nbsp;(I believe it was something like, <em>\u201cOh fuck, that\u2019s soooo good\u201d<\/em> &#8211; which is something you would either hear while watching food porn or having sex) did I step away from my monitor and have a good, long think about the appeal. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0099;\"><strong>DISCLAIMER:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span>If you&#8217;re very squeamish,&nbsp;do not play the videos&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-xGoxECwrl4\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I wondered, &#8220;Why, in god&#8217;s name, are these things so satisfying?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does it come from a hard-wired, survivalist need to stay clean and, therefore, relief at the outcome? Or is there a sexual aspect to it \u2013 and, let\u2019s be honest, it takes no stretch of the imagination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps it was something else entirely?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 26px;\"><strong>WHAT IS IT NOT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve been guilty about throwing the term OCD around, but I try my best to keep it within a very clear realm of hyperbole, but it still pisses me off when people throw the term around medical forums without actually being diagnosed as such.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a big different between <em>really REALLY<\/em>&nbsp;wanting to pick at those zits to make your skin look \u201cgood\u201d (lets not forget that doing it wrong can make the skin look worse) or really getting off on watching people dig out black nuggets of gold <strong>versus the mental disorder of excoriation<\/strong> (to uncontrollably pick at the skin until wounds form) and other such conditions like the coined term of \u201cskinorexia\u201d, where you see imperfections in the epidermis that aren\u2019t really there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although several doctors have suggested that watching such videos can be a coping mechanism rather than resorting to self-harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m going to leave things like that up to the experts and just focus on the rest of us who just can\u2019t look away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 26px;\">FOUR POPPING THEORIES<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 26px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0099;\"><strong>THEORY ONE \u2013 FETISHISM&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cRule 34\u201d \u2013 if it exists, there\u2019s porn of it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also ties into universally accepted fact that the Fetish Sea is as deep as it is painted with endless levels of perversion; with copious videos of saliva, blood, breast milk, urine, feces, and vomit that already grace porn sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>None of these, however, compare with <strong>squirting and other cum shots.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, it shouldn\u2019t be that big of a stretch to imagine those that get some degree of sexual gratification from zit popping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The current term now is called \u201c<\/strong><strong>acnephilia<\/strong><strong>.\u201d <\/strong>And while there are no academic or clinical studies of this as a real fetish, there are plenty <span style=\"color: #ff0099;\">people arguing for or against the classification.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0099;\"><span style=\"font-size: 26px;\"><strong>THEORY TWO \u2013 PENIS ENVY<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I can totally see a connection to gushing bodily fluids.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Penis envy is a fairly outdated idea &#8211; one&nbsp;based on a lot of old misconceptions. Specifically the idea that women envy the sexual pleasure men can feel and the convenience of having a wiener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of this came from a period where women\u2019s sexual needs were classified as medical problems and something to be ashamed about, and society was even more male-dominated that it is today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will concede that <em>some<\/em>&nbsp;people do have &#8220;penis envy&#8221;, but there are men who have womb envy and wish they had the ability to feed their offspring with their own mammary glands. It\u2019s just not at the core of enough people to be explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The writer certainly gets props for trying though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I9SL_lrKmKs\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"color: #7f8c8d;\">Do you wish you had a penis while watching this?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0099;\"><span style=\"font-size: 26px;\"><strong>THEORY THREE \u2013 DISGUST AND DANGER<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of the few things that comes close to a \u201cmajority consensus\u201d, and you\u2019ll almost always see a quote from <em>Daniel Kelly,<\/em> author of <em><u>Yuck!: The Nature and Moral Significance of Disgust.<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;It&#8217;s the same kind of thrill people get from, say, riding a roller coaster or bungee jumping \u2014 it activates the experience the typically comes with a real kind of danger while actually being protected from the harmful effects typically associated with those situations.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Personally, I like <span style=\"color: #ff0099;\"><em><strong>Dean McKay, <\/strong><\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"color: #ff0099;\"><strong>Ph.D\u2019s<\/strong><\/span><\/em> approach better&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike Kelly, who majors in philosophy, McKay\u2019s education focuses on OCD, anxiety, and disgust in anxiety disorders. He actually studies this stuff for a living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McKay says, <strong><em>\u201cSeeking out videos of this sort stimulates an emotional state that isn&#8217;t frequently provoked.\u201d <\/em>Also, <em>&#8220;There&#8217;s relief associated with popping pimples, even though the product secreted is deemed disgusting.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, it seems that&nbsp;people who have had (or still have) acne are the ones who love to watch these the most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are told over and over again NOT TO POP anything. Even my grandma was pretty stern on me not even <em>touching<\/em>&nbsp;my face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watching others do it (or doing it on others) give us the relief we want without the repercussions. We are biologically hardwired to avoid anything disgusting for the sake of our health and some subconscious need to maintain the species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In short \u2013 watching a video take away something gross makes us feel better, relieved, or sated. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0099;\"><span style=\"font-size: 26px;\"><strong>THEORY FOUR \u2013 RELIEF FROM ANXIETY<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most famous YouTuber, <em>Dr. Sandra Lee<\/em>, is a dermatologist best known for her zit vids (<em>Dr. Vikram<\/em> is insanely popular as well), and she voices much of what an enthusiastic subReddit does \u2013 that the process is hypnotic and calming.<em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u201cI have seen people mention&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Autonomous_sensory_meridian_response\"><em>ASMR<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;(autonomous sensory meridian response), or that it is something primitive,\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;says Lee.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some watchers apparently use the videos to help fall asleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe it ties into things we looked at in the Disgust and Danger theory.
